Photography

What is photography?

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines photography as "the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (as film or an optical sensor)."

NOTE how it defines photography as an "art".

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines a picture as, "a design or representation made by various means (as painting, drawing, or photography)"

NOTE how it does not define a picture as "art"

For clarity; painting and drawing are both art forms--as is sculpting, etching, etc...--the point being make here is that a picture is something anyone can do. A picture taken with a camera is generally referred to as a "snapshot" by some professionals.

A snapshot is defined as: "a quick, casual photograph taken quickly--usually with very little regard to lighting or composition--typically taken by an amateur with a small handheld camera."

Simply put, a person points a camera in the direction of a subject--with no regard of light or composition--and and presses the shutter button.

A photo or photograph is, usually, a well thought out composition that is followed through to the end process and is visually appealing.

Ansel Adams once said, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it”

This is true with any form of art.  The artist sees what the non-artist does not, and works passionately--and with great effort and endeavor--to allow that Beauty, hidden to the normal eye and mind, to be seen, known, and enjoyed.  This is done using the tools of the trade.  Those that paint use paint, brushes, paper, canvas, etc.., those that draw use pencils, paper, colors, etc; architects and construction workers use the various mediums they need to make tangible what they see in their mind's eye; writers use words, videographers--like photographers--use cameras, light, and the subjects in front of them.
